Systematic Review Software in 2026: Covidence, Rayyan, Elicit, and Littview Compared
Choosing review software comes down to one question: which stages of your review does it cover, and how? This guide answers that stage by stage, from what each tool documents today. No scores, no opinions in the cells.
We build Littview. Every fact about Covidence, Rayyan, and Elicit below comes from their own help centers and pricing pages, checked on 3 September 2026.
Legend: ✓ documented · ◐ partial or plan-gated · — not offered · n/d not in the vendor's public docs.
The four in one line
| In one line | Starts at | Pricing model | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Covidence | The established double-screening workflow, with a path to RevMan | Your database export | Per review |
| Rayyan | Fast collaborative screening that has grown into extraction and risk of bias | Your database export | Per seat, free reviewer invites |
| Elicit | AI search first, then screening, extraction, and reports on what it finds | A research question | Per user |
| Littview | Screening to report in one project: AI suggests, reviewers decide | Your database export | Per project; one plan covers everyone |
1.Getting references in
| Covidence | Rayyan | Elicit | Littview | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Formats | EndNote XML, PubMed, RIS | RIS, BibTeX, EndNote XML, PubMed XML, NBIB, CSV | RIS, BibTeX, PDF; Zotero, EndNote, Mendeley | BibTeX, RIS, PubMed MEDLINE, EndNote XML; Zotero |
| Full-text PDFs | ✓ upload or open-access link | ✓ manual, bulk, or auto-retrieve (paid) | ✓ upload, browser extension | ✓ manual, bulk, or Zotero |
| Size limits | 15,000 refs / 50 MB per file; unlimited files | 100 MB per file, 10 files at a time; no article limit stated | 5,000 papers per review (Pro), 40,000 (Enterprise) | 200 refs (Free); 10,000 (Pro); custom (Institution) |
| Duplicate detection | ✓ automatic on import | ✓ | ✓ semantic | ✓ automatic |
| Resolving duplicates | Automatic | Rule-based, in bulk (Essential+) | Pair by pair: merge, delete, keep | Manually, or automatically above a similarity threshold (Pro) |
| Removed duplicates counted in PRISMA | ✓ | ✓ | n/d | ✓ |
Covidence, Rayyan, and Littview all carry the duplicate count into the PRISMA diagram, so that number is never re-typed.
2.Screening
| Covidence | Rayyan | Elicit | Littview | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Your own criteria | ✓ | ✓ | ✓ | ✓ |
| Reviews per paper | Single or double | Blind mode; free reviewer invites, capped by plan | AI screens; you review its calls | Any number you choose; papers distributed and balanced across reviewers |
| Full-text stage | ✓ | ✓ | ✓ | ✓ |
| Notes and highlights | ✓ notes, tags | ✓ labels, exclusion reasons, notes | AI quotes and exclusion reasons | ✓ PDF highlights and notes, kept with the decision |
| Conflicts between reviewers | Consensus step | Surface after unmasking | ◐ Enterprise: conflicts surfaced after dual review | Side-by-side votes and notes; owner or assistant decides |
| Relevance ranking | ✓ "Most Relevant" | ✓ AI predictions, from Free | ✓ sorts by likelihood | — |
| Per-paper AI suggestion | RCT tag only | ◐ AI Reviewer (Business/Academic): Include/Exclude/Maybe, per-criterion Met/Not met/Unclear, reasoning | ✓ | ✓ Include/Exclude, confidence, criteria met, reasoning; learns from the project's own resolved papers |
| AI reads the full text | Screening AI works on title and abstract | AI Reviewer runs on title and abstract | ✓ | ✓ opt-in, when a PDF is attached |
| Who decides | Humans screen every record | Reviewer; AI Reviewer votes as a member | AI decides; you can override (dual human review on Enterprise) | You. The AI never records a decision |
The AI column is where the four differ most. Covidence ranks and tags; Rayyan ranks on every plan and, on Business/Academic, adds an AI Reviewer that votes like a member; Elicit screens for you and lets you override. Littview's AI reads each paper against your criteria, learns from the project's past decisions once enough papers are resolved, and hands you a suggestion with its reasoning.
Also in Littview: an assistant who is not screening can resolve conflicts, so an owner who also screens is not judging their own votes. AI can be switched on or off per member.
3.Data extraction
| Covidence | Rayyan | Elicit | Littview | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Form builder | ✓ Extraction 2 templates | ✓ custom questions | ✓ table columns | ✓ custom questions, grouped in sections; reusable templates |
| Working view | PDF beside the form | PDF beside the form | Table with supporting quotes | PDF beside the form |
| Answer linked to the passage | ✓ supporting quote on AI suggestions | ◐ ResearchPilot highlights (Business/Academic) | ✓ supporting quotes | ✓ highlight per answer; AI answers quote the passage and page |
| Second extractor | ✓ two extractors + consensus | ✓ blind dual extraction; mismatched answers flagged | Dual review covers screening only | ✓ every paper gets an extractor and a separate verifier, paired automatically across all extractors |
| AI pre-fill | ✓ suggestions, accept or reject each | ◐ ResearchPilot (Business/Academic) | ✓ | ✓ with the evidence passage |
Covidence, Rayyan, and Littview all support double extraction. In Littview, you assign the included papers to two or more collaborators. Each paper then goes to one person to extract and to a different person to verify, and the pairs rotate so the workload is balanced across everyone.
4.Risk of bias
| Covidence | Rayyan | Elicit | Littview | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| RoB 1 | ✓ default template | — | — | — |
| RoB 2 | ◐ custom template; into RevMan via CSV | ✓ built in, for RCTs | — | — |
| Other frameworks | ◐ custom templates | Planned | — | ✓ MMAT 2018 ready-made in the extraction template; any other checklist as custom questions |
Rayyan is the only one of the four with RoB 2 built in today. Covidence ships RoB 1 as standard and handles RoB 2 as a custom template. Littview handles appraisal inside the extraction template: MMAT 2018 ships ready-made, with a section per study design and each item rated Yes, No, or Can't tell, so appraisal is recorded alongside the rest of the data, and any other checklist can be added as custom questions. Elicit has no risk-of-bias support.
5.Reporting
| Covidence | Rayyan | Elicit | Littview | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| PRISMA 2020 flow diagram | ✓ | ✓ Essential+ | ✓ since May 2026 | ✓ |
| Filled from the workflow | ✓ ("studies not retrieved" by hand) | ◐ duplicate and screening counts filled; search sources, retrieval, and included counts entered by hand | ✓ | ✓ counts from the project's records; search sources entered once |
| Diagram export | DOCX | PDF, PNG, SVG, interactive HTML | With the report (PDF, Word) | SVG, PNG, DOCX |
| Extraction / evidence table | ✓ CSV, Excel | ✓ CSV | ✓ CSV, Excel | ✓ filterable, CSV export |
| Methods section draft | — | — | ◐ search strategy and study characteristics included in the report | ✓ drafted from your criteria, sources, screening setup, and the project's live counts, under PRISMA 2020 headings; DOCX |
| Results synthesis draft | — | — | ✓ AI report with inline citations; PDF, Word | ✓ drafted from your extracted data, with a study characteristics table and numbered citations to each paper; DOCX |
| RevMan | ◐ study data, not Extraction 2 data | CSV only | — | — |
Two tools draft the write-up. Elicit generates a cited report from what it screened and extracted. Littview builds the flow diagram, the evidence table, and the Methods and Results drafts from the same project records, so the numbers match everywhere and nothing is re-entered at submission time. Covidence's strength is the other direction: a documented path into RevMan for meta-analysis.
6.Platform and people
| Covidence | Rayyan | Elicit | Littview | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Collaborators | Unlimited per review | Free Reviewer and Viewer roles; Collaborators need a seat | Per user; live co-editing on Scale | Owner's plan covers everyone: 2 invited (Free), 9 invited (Pro) |
| Native literature search | — | — | ✓ 138M papers | — |
| API | n/d | ◐ Enterprise | ✓ Pro+, plus an MCP server | Planned |
| Mobile | Mobile-optimised web for title and abstract screening | ✓ iOS and Android app | Browser | Browser |
Elicit is the only one that searches. The other three start from your own database searches, whether PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, or open indexes such as OpenAlex (478 million work records, per its homepage on 3 September 2026), and take the exported file.

One review, five people, one year
| Annual cost | Note | |
|---|---|---|
| Covidence | $339 | Single Review; collaborators unlimited |
| Rayyan | $60 · $2,500 with ResearchPilot | One Essential seat + 5 free Reviewer-role invites (screen only: no upload, dedup, or export) · Business/Academic, 5-license minimum |
| Elicit | $2,340 | Five Pro users at Academic pricing; $5,340 on Scale for live co-editing |
| Littview | $539 | One Pro plan covers all five, AI credits included |
Assumes every reviewer needs a login where the vendor bills per user. Three billing models sit behind these numbers. Covidence bills per review, so one review with many collaborators is cheapest there. Rayyan and Elicit bill per person: Rayyan's free Reviewer role can screen, but anyone who uploads, deduplicates, exports, or uses ResearchPilot needs a paid seat, and the AI plans start at five licenses, so the bill grows with the group. Littview bills the project owner once; every member and the AI credits come with that one plan.
8.Which tool for which review
Three questions settle it.
Is the search still open? If so, Elicit is the only one of the four that searches. The other three start from your export.
Do you need RevMan, or a risk-of-bias tool built in? RevMan and RoB 1 point to Covidence. RoB 2 today points to Rayyan. In Littview, MMAT is ready-made inside the extraction form and any other checklist is custom questions.
Where do you want the tool to stop? If neither question applies, you are choosing between Rayyan and Littview, and the difference is where each one stops. Rayyan is built around screening, with extraction, risk of bias, and a PRISMA diagram added around it, billed per seat with AI on Business/Academic and above. Littview carries the same records from screening through extraction to the diagram, the evidence table, and the drafted Methods and Results, with an AI suggestion at each stage, on one plan for everyone.
Every tool above does the job it was built for. The question is which job yours is.
